Freedom to Choose Project Helping Those in Justice System for 20 Years
We are proud to share that Noozhawk, a leading Santa Barbara news outlet, recently published a feature highlighting our organization’s 20 years of service: “Freedom to Choose Project Helping Those in the Justice System for 20 Years.” This article beautifully captures our mission and dedication to fostering transformation and rehabilitation for incarcerated individuals across California.
For the past 20 years, the Freedom to Choose Project has provided life-changing support to over 7,000 incarcerated individuals, delivering more than 218,700 hours of in-person education. With nearly 1,000 volunteers contributing 100,000-plus hours of service, we have brought essential life skills—such as conflict resolution, nonviolent communication, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness—to state prisons across California.
Reflecting on our 20-year milestone, our Executive Director, Forrest Leichtberg, shared:
“Our 20th anniversary is not only a reflection of past successes but also a launching point for future expansion. We are well-poised to increase our impact, helping more incarcerated individuals and their families rewrite their futures.”
Looking ahead, our goal is to expand our programs to new facilities, reaching even more individuals across California and beyond. We are immensely grateful to Noozhawk for sharing our story and for shining a spotlight on the power of choice, change, and compassion.
