The Freedom to Choose Project’s mission statement

To transform the lives of individuals impacted by incarceration through compassionate experiential education.

Our Reason for Being

The Freedom to Choose Project (FTC) is all about redemption and the power of second chances. We assist men and women in stepping free of past identifications as “criminals” and re-identifying themselves as valuable members of our society.
By incorporating shame reduction and other recent advances in neuroscience and experiential psychology, we aim to reduce recidivism by transforming prisons from the inside out.
The name of the organization, “Freedom to Choose,” was inspired by the work of Viktor Frankl and his well-known book “Man’s Search for Meaning.” Fundamental to his teaching was the lesson, hard-won as a survivor of the concentration camps, that every person always has the freedom to choose their response to the events of their life. This lesson serves as a cornerstone of what The Freedom to Choose Project teaches in prison.
From the first workshop in 2004, FTC has been steadily growing to provide programs throughout California. Through our self-study programming, FTC is now serving over 30 prisons.
