Program Coordinator


The Freedom to Choose Project (FTC) is seeking a talented, visionary, entrepreneurial individual with experience in nonprofit leadership, education, workshop facilitation, and criminal justice system and/or addiction recovery to serve as a full-time Program Coordinator.

FTC’s mission is: Transforming lives of individuals impacted by incarceration through compassionate experiential education.

We offer award-winning, educational programs to those affected by the criminal justice system both inside prisons and in the community. The Program Coordinator will perform the scheduling, implementation, and on-going maintenance and facilitation of both new and existing prison programs. This position will primarily work remotely, in geographical proximity to/onsite at FTC program locations in San Luis Obispo, Corcoran, and Chowchilla, CA – with periodic visits to our Santa Barbara, CA office. The Program Coordinator reports to the Director of Education & Director of Operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordination

  • Oversee implementation of all program activities at assigned locations, including: tracking budgets, writing grant reports, coordinating with prisons, facilitating classes and workshops, developing curriculum, starting up new programs– including a Youth Offender Program (YOP)– and coordinating with staff and volunteers to assure that programs are optimally designed and implemented.
    Manage, attend, and facilitate weekly Mentor Support Groups, YOP, and large group onsite programs as-needed & summarize program participant feedback.
  • Serve as the primary interface with prison/program sites. Maintain excellent relationships with prison/program site staff.
  • Work with the Director of Operations and Administrative Program Coordinator to ensure all logistics and operations are organized and prepared for in-prison and community programs.
  • Work with Director of Education and an educational consultant to create/refine curriculum for the new YOP and other programs as needed.
  • Network with local organizations (including: clubs, schools, churches and organizations in the criminal justice, psychology, social services, addiction recovery field) to recruit volunteers, raise awareness, and promote fundraising.
  • Research locations, oversee implementation, and conduct FTC informational/fundraising/recruiting community events (such as Community Trio Events); and engage in public speaking to raise awareness, cultivate volunteers, and expand our donor base.
  • Collaborate in creating marketing materials as needed for local events.
  • Perform administrative tasks like managing workshop participant registration and communication; engaging in e-mail & written communication with volunteers, workshop participants, donors & prospective clients; maintain volunteer, participant, client, donor & other databases; and print, file, scan, and archive event documents and records.
  • Perform HR functions by working with Director of Operations in hiring and training future site-specific Program Assistants.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Maintain excellent relations with all volunteers, engaging regularly in our online community (Mighty Networks), and responding to email and telephone questions and requests in a timely way.
  • Conduct volunteer interviews, orientations, and training as-needed.
  • Recruit and schedule volunteers for large group workshops and Mentor Support Group classes.
  • Work with Director of Education to continually expand education/qualifications of volunteers.
  • Coordinate with Volunteer Team Captains, assuring that they are prepared to handle on-site duties.
  • Recommend and conduct volunteer appreciation communications/events.
  • Write/maintain volunteer procedure manuals.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree (advanced preferred), studies in education, criminal justice, and/or spiritual psychology ideal.
  • 3+ years facilitation, teaching, and/or curriculum creation experience.
  • 3+ years project management experience, managing diverse teams and multitude of projects (non-profit experience preferred)
  • Clearly aligned with the Freedom to Choose Project’s mission. Past Freedom to Choose Project participant/volunteer preferred.
  • Experience with criminal justice system, re-entry programs, and/or addiction recovery programs preferred. Experience with teaching youth and/or newly incarcerated 18-22 year old men desirable, but not required.
  • Leadership skills in daily interactions, planning, and delegation of duties.
  • Experience being part of a virtual team preferred.
  • Highly organized, adept at working independently, resourceful, and self-directed.
  • Excellent ability to demonstrate Emotional Intelligence, working effectively with a diverse range of people and personalities while exhibiting grace under pressure.
  • Ability to inspire & work collaboratively, possess flexibility, and a positive attitude.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication, both verbal and written. Ability to speak/write Spanish a plus.
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Must be highly motivated, able to multitask while maintaining high level of attention to detail, juggle multiple projects and set priorities.
  • Excellent computer skills (Apple based), proficiency in: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Apps, Dropbox, WordPress, Wrike online project management, Zoom, Mighty Networks, etc.
  • 25-50%  travel required – must have personal vehicle and excellent driving record (travel & mileage expenses at IRS rate will be reimbursed).
  • Occasional lifting required – up to 25 pounds for setting up at conferences, workshops, or other events as needed.
  • The Freedom to Choose Project is a drug-free workplace (including medical marijuana) and candidates must successfully pass background/drug screen.
  • Criminal background check and eligibility to attain prison VIC status required at relevant institutions required.
